Holy work sometimes requires unholy deeds.
Brother Diaz has been summoned to the Sacred City, where he is certain a commendation and grand holy assignment awaits him. But his new flock is made up of unrepentant murderers, practitioners of ghastly magic, and outright monsters, and the mission he is tasked with will require bloody measures from them all in order to achieve its righteous ends.
Elves lurk at our borders and hunger for our flesh, while greedy princes care for nothing but their own ambitions and comfort. With a hellish journey before him, it’s a good thing Brother Diaz has the devils on his side.
Another book provided to me from Netgalley for an honest review.
I have never read Joe Abercrombie before and from the hype people are excited by this author. So that has got me excited that I was given a chance to read this book to see what the buzz is about.
As you can see from above the description does not give a lot of plot and that kind of excites me further because I am going with the simplest ideas of the story. All I know is that Brother Diaz is a holy man but he has “devils” on his side. There seems to be a rag-tag group of outcasts that are brought together for a mission of brutal extreme measures. Also Elves eat flesh? That is a new one.
As I write this there is 81 rating on Goodreads and only 17 on Netgalley so I am going in pretty blind but of the 81 there was 53 that gave this novel 5 stars, saying it was the definition of good fantasy and a comedy. I am lucky that ehse reviews did not spoil anything for me but built up my excitement even more.
4 reviews gave 2 stars
7 reviews gave 3 stars
17 reviews gave 4 stars – as I was looking at this the more tidbits I was reading and the more excited I got.
So lets us dive in
Potential Rating
From what I have seen I think this will be a strong 4 star read for me.
I do not think this will make me cry though which you all know how I use that as a factor.
